I am 19 years old and from Belfast and I am studying Business with Digital Marketing at Liverpool John Moores University! Over the course of 5 weeks I have become a marketing intern for InnovateHer, which included analysing their social media platforms eg, Twitter, Instagram, and Linkedin. Through the knowledge gathered from the analysis, I have had the opportunity to create and implement content to post and share on their social media platforms to reach the target markets.

As one of the final elements of my internship, I’m writing five of my biggest learnings!

5 things I learnt at InnovateHer

  1. Learnt how to use tools like Slack, Monday.com and Canva

These are platforms I was not familiar with at all but I got to grips with them quite quickly! I learnt that Slack was used within the company for quick collaboration among the team members to get feedback or even post-life updates. Monday.com is used to create custom workflows, track project progress, and assign tasks. Finally, Canva which is an online template editor app was my favourite! I was in awe of being able to create social media graphics and presentations!

  1. I learnt the importance of scheduling content

I wasn’t aware that timing is essential when it comes to reaching your target audience effectively. By scheduling content to be published at specific times, you can ensure that your posts are reaching your audience when they are most likely to be online and engaged. I had the opportunity to use a platform called Buffer to schedule posts on certain days and times that I thought enabled maximum engagement eg, posting on Instagram at 12pm on weekdays.

  1. How essential collaboration is within businesses

I have learnt that InnovateHer’s ethos is based on sharing opinions, providing ideas, brainstorming and actively listening to each other. I felt that opinions and thoughts were very honest as a safe and friendly environment has been created amongst all the employees. This safe environment allowed more complex problems to be tackled effectively and more solutions to be produced!

  1. Learnt different techniques to promote content

I learnt ways to create content that captivates and resonates with the target audience (13- 17 year olds). This was through the use of hashtags, simpler use of words, shorter captions, use of emojis, encouraging them to tag their friends on Instagram posts and post content to trending songs.

  1. Importance of brand identity

I learnt the importance of a consistent brand image on online platforms. This was something that I didn’t think would be important however, I have learnt that specific style preferences, colour schemes, and imagery are essential to ensure cohesive brand representation across all platforms!

I have had the opportunity to meet so many lovely people within InnovateHer and learn so many skills that I would never have thought I would learn or develop at the age of 19! I am so lucky to have had this internship, it has given me the knowledge to learn more about an industry I am interested in. I am excited to put these skills to use in a future job!
